Hello, my name is Abigail Mason.
I graduated from the University of St Andrews in June of 2022 with an MA in Social Anthropology and am currently pursuing an MFA in writing at Savannah College of Art and Design.
I spent 2021 and 2022 conducting field research and writing my 4th year dissertation at St Andrews, titled, "Animism to Christianity: The Interrelatedness of Colonialism, Conversion, and Nationalism in Nagaland, India," which was heavily historical research based. I also have experience in journalism and received an award for my photojournalism at the Student Publication Association National Awards 2022 and was titled the Best Student Photographer in the UK and Ireland (2022). I had the creative freedom to choose stories, both local and global, that could be paired with my own photography to share visually engaging pieces. Some of these published pieces include:
"Travel in a Lockdown Era" (March 4, 2021)
"Home: What Does it Mean to You?" (October 28, 2021)
"Day Trips Beyond the Bubble" (January 27, 2022)
"Human Interaction in St Andrews" (September 23, 2021)
I am originally from Washington D.C., but have lived all over the world, England, Scotland, South Africa, and these experiences largely shaped my passion for storytelling. Studying Social Anthropology for my undergraduate degree allowed me to hone my research skills towards the sharing of other people's stories, as well as cultural stories.
